Discernment learns the difference between a warning sign and an unfamiliar sign.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Not everything strange is dangerous. A fair amount of what your nervous system flags as threat is simply new: an unfamiliar accent, a different way of doing things, a situation you have no template for. Real warning signs have a shape, a pattern of small inconsistencies or a history that lines up. Novelty has no shape at all, only strangeness, and strangeness alone predicts nothing.

When something makes you uneasy, ask whether you could describe the specific thing that is wrong. If you can name it, take it seriously. If all you can say is that this feels off and you have never been here before, give it a little more time before you decide. Discomfort in new territory is information about the territory being new.
