You cannot outsource discernment to a rulebook without eventually meeting a situation the book never anticipated.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Rules are compressed experience, written by people who could not see your particular Tuesday. They handle the anticipated cases well and go quiet or absurd at the edges. Sooner or later you meet a situation the authors never imagined, and at that moment the rulebook cannot help you; it can only be followed off a cliff or set down. Someone has to think, and it will have to be you.
When a procedure produces a result that feels clearly wrong, do not simply comply and do not simply ignore it. Ask what the rule was trying to protect, then find the action that protects that thing here. Say out loud what you did and why, so the departure is visible rather than quiet.
Where have you let a policy make a call that was yours?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
