Growth feels awkward because it’s new, not because it’s wrong. New shoes pinch too.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Discomfort is ambiguous information, which is why it is so often misread. The feeling of doing something unfamiliar is nearly identical to the feeling of doing something mistaken, and most people treat the awkwardness as a verdict and go back to what was comfortable. Unfamiliarity fades with repetition; genuine wrongness does not.

Give a new thing enough repetitions to stop being new before you judge it. Three or four goes, not one. If it still feels wrong once the strangeness has worn off, that is real information and worth acting on.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What new thing feels wrong only because it is unfamiliar?
