Detours teach you streets the GPS would never have shown you.

Optimized routes are efficient and they teach you nothing about the place you are moving through. Being forced off the direct path is how you learn where things actually are, which streets connect, what exists two blocks from the road you always take. The knowledge only comes from being somewhere you did not intend to be.
Treat interruptions as information rather than purely as cost. When a plan collapses, look at what the new route is showing you before you rush back to the old one. A certain amount of inefficiency is how you end up knowing your way around.
Which wrong turn taught you something useful?
