Your job title is what you do from nine to five. It’s not who you are at 5:01.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A role describes an arrangement rather than a person, though the two blur when most of your waking hours sit inside it. The hours afterwards are not leftovers. They are where the parts of you that nobody pays for get to exist, and those parts are the ones that survive a change of employer.

Guard some of the evening for something with no professional value whatsoever. When work goes badly, check whether it feels like a bad week or like a verdict on you. Keeping that difference intact is most of what makes a hard job survivable.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who are you in the hours after work ends?
