Judgment becomes sharper when you ask what would change your mind before choosing a side.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Once you have taken a side, everything you encounter starts working for that side. Evidence gets read generously or harshly depending on which way it points, and this happens without any sense of dishonesty. Deciding in advance what would count against your position is the one reliable defense, because it commits you to a standard before you have a stake in where it lands.

Before you settle on a view, write down what would make you abandon it. Be specific enough that you would recognize it if it arrived. Then, if that thing happens, honor the commitment. Most people never write the sentence, which is why so few opinions ever change.
