Yelling plays from the bleachers is easy. Nobody up there ever has to worry about getting tackled.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Commentary is cheap because it carries no risk whatsoever. Whoever is out there is deciding under pressure, with incomplete information and a real cost for getting it wrong, and none of that reaches the seats. Being right from a distance is a completely different skill from choosing in the moment.

Before criticizing somebody’s call, ask whether you have ever been in that position with the same information. Say the useful part and leave the rest unsaid. Notice too where you are watching something you could be doing, since that is usually the more interesting problem.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where do you criticize from outside the actual risk?
