Emotional control is not suppression when the feeling is understood before the action is chosen.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

There is a real difference between not feeling something and not acting on it. Suppression pushes the emotion out of awareness, where it continues to operate unseen and usually leaks out sideways. Regulation lets the feeling be fully known, understood, even named out loud, and then chooses the action on other grounds. From outside these can look identical. Inside they could not be more different.

Check which one you are doing by asking whether you could say what you are feeling right now. If the answer is a blank, you are probably suppressing. If you can name it clearly and still choose calmly, you are doing the harder and better thing.
