A mood can change the meaning of yesterday without changing anything that happened yesterday.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Memory is reconstructed in the present, and your current state supplies the tone. On a bad morning yesterday’s conversation reads as an insult, and on a good one the same words read as harmless. Nothing in the past has moved. What changed is the interpreter, and because interpretation feels like recall, the revision passes unnoticed.
Be careful about reinterpreting the past while in a strong mood, especially a low one. If you find yourself rereading old exchanges and finding new cruelty in them, note the mood first. Wait until it turns and read again. If the reading holds, take it seriously then.
Which memory reads differently depending on the day you revisit it?
