Emotional maturity includes apologizing for what you did while upset without apologizing for having emotions.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Two apologies get confused. One is for what you did, the raised voice, the cutting remark, the door slammed on a conversation that needed to continue. That one is owed. The other is for having had the feeling at all, and it is not owed to anyone. Apologizing for the second teaches you that your inner life is an offense and leaves the actual behavior unaddressed.
When you make amends, be precise. Say you are sorry for what you said and how you said it. You can add that you were angry and that the anger was about something real. Naming both keeps the accountability and the honesty in the same sentence.
Whose apology from you is still waiting because you felt justified?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
