You can only be behind in a race you agreed to run.

Falling behind requires a shared schedule, and most of the timetables people measure themselves against were never chosen, only absorbed. By a certain age you should have a certain job and a certain amount saved, and none of that arrived with your consent. The lateness is real only inside a race you joined by default.

Write down the deadline you feel you are missing and ask who set it. If you cannot find an author, you are free to revise it. Then set one timeline you actually agree with, even if it is slower than the one you inherited.
