If your best friend needed half a year to figure it out, you’d wait. Offer yourself that same half year.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

The standard you hold yourself to is often one you would consider cruel applied to anyone you love. You would give a friend time, context and the benefit of the doubt without hesitating, and then hand yourself a deadline and a verdict. The difference is not fairness. It is habit.

Take the thing you are currently behind on in your own estimation and say it out loud as if it were a friend’s situation. Hear what you would say back. Then give yourself that version, including the timeline. Six months is not long to work something out, unless the person working it out is you.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Would you give yourself the patience you give a friend?
