Mercy without judgment can accidentally finance the next harm.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Letting something go without any judgment about what happened can leave the door open for it to happen again, often to someone with less power to object. Compassion that never asks what conditions produced the harm ends up funding the next occurrence. Kindness and clear sight are not opposites; kindness without clear sight simply moves the cost onto whoever comes next.

When you forgive something, still take the practical step. Change the arrangement, add the safeguard, have the conversation about what has to be different. You can hold no resentment toward a person and still decline to leave the conditions exactly as they were.
