Justice becomes difficult when compassion and accountability both have legitimate claims.

LEADERSHIP
Someone can have every reason for what they did and still owe something for it. Understanding the pressures that produced a harm and holding a person answerable for it are both legitimate, and they pull in opposite directions. Any system or family that resolves the tension too quickly, by always excusing or always condemning, has stopped doing the hard part.
When you have to respond to someone who caused real harm under real pressure, try to say both things out loud. Acknowledge what they were carrying and name what still has to be put right. Holding the two together is uncomfortable, and it is the only version that respects everyone involved.
