A punishment that satisfies anger but teaches nothing may simply multiply damage.

LEADERSHIP
A response that discharges anger and teaches nothing simply adds a second harm to the first. It feels like resolution because something happened and someone paid, but nothing has been understood, repaired, or prevented. The measure of a consequence is whether it changes anything, not whether it satisfies the wish for the other person to suffer.
When you are deciding on a consequence, ask what you want the person to understand afterward and whether this will produce that understanding. If the honest answer is that you mostly want them to feel it, wait. The version you devise a day later will usually work better and cost less.
Which consequence you handed out made you feel better and changed nothing?
