Compassion is tested most seriously when understanding someone does not make their behavior acceptable.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

The hard cases are the ones where you understand completely and still cannot accept what was done. Compassion is undemanding when explanation and forgiveness point the same way. It becomes genuine work when you can see the whole chain of causes and still have to say that this was not all right, that something has to change, that the harm counts.

When you find yourself in that position, resist the pull to resolve it in either direction. Keep the understanding, keep the refusal, and act on both: warmth toward the person, clarity about the behavior. It will feel unfinished, and unfinished is the correct shape for it.
