Ask someone who’s sixty what they worried about at sixteen. Watch them laugh.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Worries shrink with distance, and almost nobody carries the specific fears of their teenage years into later life. That does not make the worry fake now, since it is entirely real while you are inside it. It does suggest the proportions you are working with are temporary ones.

Actually ask an older person you trust what kept them awake at that age. Listen for what turned out to matter and what quietly did not. Then look at your own list and see which items would survive that same conversation in forty years.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which worry of yours will sound small in forty years?
