Justice asks us to care about people we never personally meet.
GRATITUDE
GRATITUDE
Most of the people affected by any serious decision are strangers to you, and the mind gives strangers almost no weight. A face you know outranks a thousand you do not, which is a fine setting for a small tribe and a poor one for a world where your choices, purchases, and votes reach far past the people you can see.
When a decision affects people you will never meet, put at least one of them into concrete terms. Not to manufacture guilt, only to give them a share of the attention that proximity would have granted automatically. Distance makes harm easier to ignore, and correcting for that has to be deliberate.
Whose life, far from yours, do you let yourself care about?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
