Dread grows in the space between you and the thing you are avoiding. As long as it stays unopened, your mind is free to imagine the worst version, and it will, because guessing is cheaper than looking. The actual task is almost always smaller and duller than the one you built while not doing it.

Pick the thing you have been walking past all week and open it, with no requirement to finish or fix anything. Just look and see its real size. Most of the relief comes from the looking, and what remains is usually one afternoon of ordinary work.
