The most important sentence in a conversation is sometimes the one they didn’t finish.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

People stop mid-sentence for a reason. The trailing off is usually the edge of something they are not sure they want to say, or are testing whether you want to hear. Because the silence is awkward, most conversations rush past it, and whatever was arriving gets left there permanently.

When someone stops, do not fill it. Wait, or repeat back the last few words they said and let the pause sit. If it feels right, ask gently what they were going to say. The thing on the other side of that hesitation is often the only part of the conversation that mattered.
