Move to a new city alone and you’ll discover which parts of you were really you and which were your old zip code.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Place shapes people more than anyone realises until they leave one. Habits, opinions, the volume you speak at, even what you find funny: much of it was inherited from a particular set of streets and a particular set of people. Somewhere new strips that away and shows you what was actually yours.

A whole move is not required to run a smaller version of the test. Spend a few days somewhere nobody knows you and notice what you keep doing anyway. Those parts travel with you, and they are the ones worth knowing about.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which habits of yours belong to you, not your hometown?
