Little kids can play alone for hours with a stick and a puddle. At some point we unlearned that. Learn it back.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Playing alone is a skill, and like most skills it fades through disuse. Small children have it by default, because a stick and a puddle are enough when you are not yet checking whether the activity counts. Somewhere along the way the question of whether something is worth doing got attached to everything, and the capacity thinned out.
Do something this week with no outcome and no audience, purely for its own sake. It will feel faintly silly for the first ten minutes. Stay past that and the old capacity returns quicker than you would expect.
Could you entertain yourself for an hour with nothing?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
