There’s a voice in your head calling the plays. Decide whether it’s a coach or a heckler in the cheap seats.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

An internal voice narrates your performance, and it was assembled out of things other people said years ago. Some of it is useful and corrective, and some is cruelty repeating itself with no plan attached. The difference is whether it tells you what to do next or only what you are.

Listen to the commentary during your next mistake and ask which of the two it is doing. If it is only naming faults, ask it for the next instruction. A voice that cannot give one is not coaching you, and you are allowed to turn it down.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Does the voice in your head coach you or heckle you?
