Your values are your phone settings. If you never set them yourself, you’re running on factory defaults.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Values arrive preinstalled unless you go in and change them. Family, school, whichever crowd you were around at fifteen: each of them wrote something, and a set of defaults is not the same as a choice. You can keep most of them, but keeping is different from never having looked.

Name three things you treat as obvious about how a person should live. For each one, ask where it came from and whether you would pick it now. Some will survive the question easily, and those will hold up better for having been asked.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which value of yours has never been chosen deliberately?
