The fewer words you use, the heavier each one lands.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Words dilute each other. A point buried in three paragraphs has to be searched for, and everything around it takes a share of its weight, while the same point alone in a short sentence has nowhere to hide and nothing competing with it. Length is often just a way of hedging.
Take something you are about to send and cut it in half without losing the meaning. Notice what you were adding: softening, justifying, covering yourself in advance. Say the remaining thing plainly and let it stand on its own.
Where could you say half as much and mean more?
