Awe is what happens when reality becomes larger than the categories you brought with you.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

You arrive at every experience with a set of containers ready: sizes, categories, expectations of how much a thing can be. Awe is the moment something exceeds all of them at once and the containers visibly fail. That is why it comes with a kind of pleasant disorientation, and why it is so hard to produce deliberately. It requires meeting something your preparation did not cover.

Put yourself where your categories are likely to break: a mountain, a cathedral, deep water, a very old thing, a very large gathering. Do not narrate it while you are there. The value comes from the moment your usual measurements stop working, and commentary tends to repair them too quickly.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did something you saw refuse to fit anything you already knew?
