A guilt trip is a ride someone booked on your conscience. You don’t have to get in the car.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Guilt is a useful signal when it comes from your own sense of having done wrong. It is something else when it is installed by someone who wants an outcome and has found that pressure works faster than asking. The tell is that the feeling arrives with no clear fault attached, only an obligation that appeared from nowhere.

When guilt shows up, ask what exactly you did. If you can name it, address it; if you cannot, the feeling probably belongs to someone else’s strategy. You can be kind to the person and still decline what they are asking you to feel.
