Owning up before anyone asks is the rarest flex in any friend group.

Admitting something before you are asked changes the entire exchange. The other person was preparing to accuse or investigate, and instead they have to respond to honesty, which hardly anyone is ready for. It also removes the part that does the real damage, which is the discovery. You spend a minute of discomfort and avoid a month of suspicion.
Next time you know something will surface, be the one who says it, and say it before your defense is ready. No build-up and no cushioning. Watch how much smaller the consequence turns out to be.
When did you admit a mistake before being caught?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
