A person controlled by proving they do not care is still being controlled.

Proving indifference takes constant effort, and the effort is the giveaway. Someone arranging their behavior to demonstrate that a person or an outcome does not matter is spending as much attention on it as someone who admits it does, with the added cost of having to conceal the whole operation. Real indifference requires no maintenance.

Notice where you are working to seem unbothered. Ask what would change if you simply admitted, at least privately, that this matters to you. Usually the admission is the thing that returns your attention to your own life, and the performance was what kept you attached.
