When you’re the newest on the team, every mistake feels like everyone’s watching. Most are busy with their own.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being new makes you feel conspicuous, and that feeling is not a measurement of how much attention you are getting. Everyone else in the room is mostly inside their own head, keeping their own private count of what went wrong. Your mistake registered for a second and then got replaced by one of theirs. The spotlight is vivid to you and nearly invisible to them.

Try an experiment at the next session. After somebody else messes up, notice how quickly you stop thinking about it, because that is roughly what happens to yours. Then use the room you just found to try the thing you have been avoiding.
