A pattern with three points may be a pattern or merely three points.

Three occurrences make a line only if there is a reason for the line. Otherwise they are three events, and the pattern is a shape your mind laid over them. Given enough data, coincidences of this size are guaranteed, which means finding one tells you almost nothing until you can say why it would continue.

When you spot a pattern, ask what mechanism would produce it and whether you would have predicted it in advance. If you can answer, act on it. If you only noticed it afterward and have no explanation, note it and wait for more before building anything on it.
