Good reasoning is willing to lose an argument to better evidence.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

The point of an argument is to end up in a better position than you started, and that sometimes means the other person’s evidence wins. Treating a conversation as something to be won guarantees you learn nothing whenever you are wrong, which is precisely when learning is most available. The skill is being able to say the other case is better without experiencing it as a defeat.

Practice conceding a small point in your next disagreement, out loud and without qualification. It is uncomfortable and it changes the conversation immediately. And it makes the times you do hold your ground considerably more credible.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did you last change your mind mid-conversation?
