If examining a belief feels dangerous, the danger may be to the belief.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

The sense of threat when a belief is examined is usually about the belief rather than about you. Something is resting on it: an identity, a relationship, a decision already made, an account of your own past. The alarm is real and it is protecting the structure, not warning you of anything about the inquiry itself.

When looking at something feels dangerous, ask what would have to be rearranged if it turned out to be wrong. Naming that makes the fear specific and manageable. You may still decide not to pull the thread today, and at least you will know what the thread is attached to.
