An ugly first week at a job feels like proof you can’t do it. It’s proof you’re new. Those look identical for a while.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Incompetence and inexperience produce the same week: slow, clumsy, full of things you had to ask about twice. From inside there is no way to tell them apart, which is why people quit things they would have been good at by the end of the month. Time is the only test that separates the two, and it is almost always newness.

Give anything new four weeks before you draw conclusions, and write down on the first day what feels impossible. Read it back at the end. If it is still impossible then, that is worth a conversation with somebody.
