Hard work and good luck both matter. Be honest about both when you tell your story.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Most results come from a mix, and both halves get dropped in the telling for different reasons. Leaving out the luck makes you harder to learn from, and quietly tells people who had worse luck that they did not try. Leaving out the work is false modesty and also inaccurate. The honest version is more useful to everybody, yourself included.

Next time you explain how something went well for you, name one piece of luck in it out loud: a teacher, a timing, a person who opened a door. Keep the work in too. Doing that consistently makes you somebody people ask for real advice.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What luck would you have to mention to tell your story honestly?
