Plenty of people get rich and stay miserable. Plenty stay modest and live well. Money is a tool, not a grade.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Treating money as a score makes the number a verdict on you, and no amount ever settles the question. As a tool it is clearer: it buys security, time, options and the ability to help people, and past a certain point it stops buying much at all. Having more of it changes your circumstances rather than your character or your mood.

Work out what you actually want money for, in specific terms: not having to worry about a bill, a car that starts, a year of study. Aim at those rather than at a figure. And notice whether you are using it to keep score against anybody.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would you want money for if it proved nothing?
