The best captains remember exactly what it felt like to sit on the bench.

LEADERSHIP
What makes somebody good at running a group is usually a memory rather than a technique. If you know how long an hour on the bench feels, you notice the kid nobody has spoken to all practice, because you were that kid. People who always started have to guess, and they often guess wrong. Authority erases the view from underneath unless you work at keeping it.
So write down now what the hard part feels like, while you are still in it. If you ever get the armband or the shift lead, read it back. Then do the small thing you wanted somebody to do for you.
What did sitting out teach you that you’d use in charge?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
