Pick a goal that would still make sense if nobody ever found out you reached it.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Strip the audience out and see what is left. Some goals turn out to be mostly about being seen to have reached them, which is why arriving can feel oddly flat: what you wanted was the moment of other people noticing, and that lasts about a week. A goal that survives the removal of witnesses is one you want for its own content. The test is quick and fairly unforgiving.

Take whatever you are aiming at and picture reaching it with nobody ever finding out. If it still appeals, keep going. If it collapses, the question was not wasted, because you just learned what you were actually after.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which of your goals survives having no audience at all?
