Listen to the person who’s been doing it for thirty years. They’ve watched a lot of “new ideas” fail.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Experience is mostly a catalogue of failures you were not around for. Somebody who has done the work for thirty years has watched a dozen clever approaches arrive, get adopted enthusiastically, and quietly disappear, and that pattern is not available to anyone who started last year. Their caution is not a shortage of imagination, it is data. They may well be wrong about what works now, and they are rarely wrong about what has already been tried.

Ask them the specific question rather than the general one: what have you seen people try that failed, and why. Then make your own call. Listening is not the same as obeying.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which long-timer’s warning have you been quietly dismissing?
