Signing up for the 6 a.m. lifeguard shift is a deal you make with a version of you who isn’t awake yet. Keep it anyway.

LEADERSHIP
Agreements made in the evening get presented to a completely different person at six in the morning. Whoever signed up had energy, good intentions and no immediate cost, while the one who must honour it has none of those, so willingness is an unreliable thing to lean on. Keeping it anyway is how you become somebody whose word works. Reliability gets built on exactly these small unwitnessed occasions.
So cut down the number of decisions left for the morning. Clothes out, bag packed, alarm across the room, nothing to negotiate. And the person you let down by not going is also the one who agreed to it.
Which promise did you make that your tired self has to keep?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
