Keeping a bakery open through a bad year takes more nerve than a great opening day.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Starting something has excitement on its side. Continuing it through a flat stretch has none of that: no novelty, no congratulations, and a steady suspicion that you were wrong to begin. The nerve people admire in launches is mostly enthusiasm, while the nerve that keeps a thing alive is quieter and much rarer. Survival is the real skill and it photographs badly.

Look at whatever you began with a lot of energy and have gone cold on. Decide to continue it at a smaller size rather than quitting or forcing a relaunch. Smaller and still running beats impressive and finished.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What have you kept going through a stretch when it was hard?
