Many top orchestras audition players behind a screen. When it really counts, the work has to speak without your face.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Behind a screen nothing helps you except the playing: not charm, not connections, not how you look standing there. That is a hard standard and a fair one, and it points at something useful about preparation. If the work cannot carry itself once everything around it is stripped away, the work is the thing to improve. Most of what we lean on turns out to be scaffolding.

Test your own thing bare. Record yourself and listen without watching, or hand over your writing with no name and no explanation attached. Whatever you were unconsciously relying on becomes obvious within a minute.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Would your work hold up if nobody knew whose it was?
