The best legacy for a dog trainer is a dog who behaves when they’re not in the room. Same goes for leaders.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Anybody can get compliance while standing over somebody. The real work is building something that holds after you leave the room: understanding rather than pressure, habits rather than supervision. If a thing falls apart the moment you step out, what you built was your presence and not any actual training. The test of teaching is always what happens in your absence.

Try stepping out of something you normally hold together, on purpose and briefly. A shift, a group project, a younger sibling doing a task. Watch what survives, and treat whatever collapses as the part you have not finished teaching.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Do the people you have taught still do it right unsupervised?
