Listen first and your point lands better when it’s your turn.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being heard is partly a matter of order. When you speak first, people spend your sentences preparing their own, whereas if you have shown that you understood theirs, the room will actually take yours in. Listening also tends to change the point you were going to make, usually for the better.

In the next disagreement, say back what the other person means before you answer, in your own words. Ask one question you do not know the answer to. Then make your point once, briefly, and let it sit.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

In your last disagreement, did you listen or just wait?
