Screenshots make “I was just joking” a lot harder to argue.

Tone does not survive a screenshot. What you meant, the way you said it, the three messages before that made it funny: none of it travels, and the words sit there with nobody to explain them. Anything you type is a sentence somebody can hold up later in a room you are not standing in.

Before you send something sharp, read it once as though the person it is about will see it. If that reading makes you wince, the joke is not finished. Saying the same thing to someone’s face is slower and far easier to repair.
