“Everybody else is doing it” has never once paid anyone’s fine.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Other people doing something tells you about the crowd, not about what happens to you. The consequence arrives individually: your name on the ticket, your parents in that conversation, your money. The crowd scatters, and the part that stayed is yours. Whatever comfort the number gave you in the moment does not transfer.

When you catch yourself counting how many others are doing it, swap the question for what happens if this goes wrong for me. Say it in those words, since the pronoun is the whole point. If the answer is something you would be carrying alone, step out even if nobody else does.
