Every generation’s slang sounds silly to the one before. Yours will too. That’s how language stays alive.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Older people hear new words as decay because they learned theirs during the years when their own sounded normal, and everything since has sounded like noise. Every word they consider proper was once somebody’s irritating invention. Language keeps working precisely because each group bends it to describe things the previous set of words could not reach. Being mocked for your vocabulary is a sign the system is running.

Use your own words without apologising for them, and be a little gentler about your grandparents’ expressions. Ask an older relative what their slang was, which is usually worth an hour. Expect to find yours ridiculous by about thirty.
