People can’t say yes to a hint. Ask for the thing.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Hints hand somebody a puzzle instead of a request, and even people who want to help cannot act on something they were never told. Guess right and you learn nothing about whether they would have agreed; guess wrong and you end up resentful about a question you never asked. The ambiguity protects you from a no and equally from a yes. Only a clear request can be granted.

Take the thing you have been circling and put it in one sentence with a who, a what and a when. Send it to whoever can decide. A no you can work with; a hint you cannot.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who could say yes if you just asked them plainly?
