Advice nobody asked for usually lands as criticism. Ask first: “Want my take?”

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Advice given without an invitation lands as a verdict on how you are handling things. Even when the suggestion is good, the message underneath is that somebody was watching and scoring, which is why what comes back is defensiveness rather than thanks. Asking first turns identical words into something requested.

Ask the short version before you launch in: whether they want your take or want you to listen. Then honor whichever answer you get. Sitting with somebody who only wanted company is harder than solving it and usually more useful.
