Calling someone “dramatic” is an easy way to stop listening. Check whether they’re just upset.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Labeling somebody dramatic is a way of closing the file. Once that word is attached, everything they say arrives pre-discounted, and you no longer have to work out whether they have a point, because the volume has become the subject. Plenty of people called dramatic were upset about something real and not quiet about it.

When that word starts forming, hold it for a minute and ask what they are actually upset about. Deal with that first and the intensity usually drops on its own. If it turns out they were overreacting, you have lost nothing by checking.
